How to Get There? +

Nearest airport to Outer Banks is Norfolk International Airport. It is about a 2.5-hour drive to the house. If you are flying into Norfolk, be sure to rent a 4×4 vehicle to access the home.

What is unique about the 4×4 area? +

The 4×4 area offers wide beaches, dense maritime forests, and marshy soundside. It is an 11-mile stretch of sand north of Corolla and south of the Virginia border, with no paved roads. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required. Guests drive on the beach and behind the dunes to reach the home. Wild horses are often spotted in the area — a truly unique experience!

Are passes required to drive or park on the 4×4 beaches? +

Parking permits are required to park on the beach from the last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in October. You do not need a pass to drive on the beach or park at the house.

How do I purchase a parking pass? +

Passes are available online at this link. The current weekly pass is $50. Passes must be picked up in person after purchase.

Suggestions for driving on 4×4 beaches? +

✅ Use 4×4 or AWD vehicles with at least 7.5" ground clearance.
✅ Bring a tire pressure gauge and lower tires to 18-20 psi.
✅ Lower pressure before the North Beach Access ramp.
✅ Complimentary air hoses are available at Twiddy Corolla office.
✅ Check the tide — low tide is ideal.
✅ Arrive before dark for easier navigation.
✅ Speed limit: 35 mph (15 mph near pedestrians/horses).
✅ Avoid driving through surf or seafoam.
✅ Park vehicles in the middle of the beach.
✅ No parking for the first 1.5 miles — look for signage.
✅ Drivers must be 16+ with a valid license.
✅ Street-legal UTV/side-by-sides are not permitted.
✅ Personal watercraft (jet skis) are allowed in Currituck Sound only.

Is there a security deposit? +

Yes, a temporary hold will be placed on your card before check-in. This is not a charge and will be released after the post-checkout inspection confirms no damage.

Do you charge an event fee? +

Yes. The event fee covers hosting up to 50 additional event-only guests, vendor flexibility, included linens/towels/trash removal, dedicated event support, and additional insurance for large gatherings. Our event package offers excellent value.

What is the event fee, and how is it different from the rental fee? +

The event fee is separate from the rental fee and covers extra services needed for weddings, corporate events, or large gatherings. It allows for up to 50 non-overnight guests and includes linens, trash removal, team support, and covers additional wear/tear and insurance.
