4×4 Beach Access
What is unique about the 4×4 area?
+
The 4×4 area is an 11-mile stretch of undeveloped coastline north of Corolla and south of the Virginia border — wide beaches, dense maritime forests, and marshy soundside. There are no paved roads. You drive on the beach itself to reach the homes. Wild horses roam freely through this area, including through the backyards of homes. It's a genuinely one-of-a-kind experience you won't find anywhere else on the East Coast.
Are parking passes required for the 4×4 beaches?
+
Currituck County requires 4×4 parking permits to park on the beach from the
last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in October. You do not need a pass to drive on the beach or to park at your property. Weekly passes cost $50 and must be purchased online at
currituckcountync.ticketspice.com and picked up in person after purchase. Passes sell out — purchase early.
What are the rules and tips for driving on the 4×4 beach?
+
Tyre pressure: Lower pressure before reaching the North Beach Access. Currituck County limits:
- Under ¾ ton — max 20 psi (recommended 18–20 psi)
- ¾ to 1 ton — max 30 psi
Violations carry a $50 fine. Complimentary air hoses are available at the Twiddy Corolla office near Historic Corolla Park.
Timing: Low tide is easiest — check tides before arriving. Arrive before dark. Speed limit is 35 mph (15 mph near pedestrians or wild horses).
Where to drive: Stick to hard-packed sand near the waterline or soft sand east of the dune line. Avoid surf and seafoam. Park in the middle of the beach without blocking traffic. No parking for the first 1.5 miles from the access point — violators will be towed.
Drivers: Must be 16+ with a valid licence. Street-legal UTVs/side-by-sides are not allowed except by county permit for residents and property owners.
What vehicles are recommended for the 4×4 beach?
+
We recommend 4×4 or AWD vehicles with at least 7.5 inches of ground clearance. Standard passenger cars and minivans are not suitable — they will get stuck. If you're driving a high-clearance SUV with AWD, you'll be fine with proper tyre deflation. Jeep Wranglers, Ford F-150s, and full-size 4×4 SUVs are ideal. If you're unsure about your vehicle, rent one locally or at the Norfolk Airport.
What about guests without a 4×4 vehicle?
+
It's common for some guests in the party not to have a 4×4 vehicle. We offer additional off-site parking approximately 8 miles from the property near Historic Corolla Park (GPS: 36.377918, -75.831948 — approximately 23 minutes). We provide 3 parking spots at the beach, plus 1 overflow spot 2.5 miles from the beach house for non-4×4 vehicles. Contact us to coordinate logistics for your group.
Where can I rent a 4×4 vehicle near the Outer Banks?
+
Several rental options are available:
We strongly recommend booking your rental well in advance during peak summer season as 4×4 vehicles sell out quickly.
What is the best time to drive on the 4×4 beach?
+
Low tide is always the best time — the hard-packed sand near the waterline is firm and easy to drive on. Check the tide chart before heading out. Travel during daylight, especially on your first trip. At night, be alert to changing beach conditions, people, wild horses, debris, and tree stumps. Weather matters too — avoid driving during or immediately after heavy rain or storms when soft sand can shift unpredictably.
Booking & Policies
What is the minimum stay requirement?
+
A 7-night minimum stay is required for most bookings, particularly in peak summer season. We do have some flexibility in the off-season (fall, winter, early spring). If you're interested in a shorter stay, please inquire directly — we handle these case-by-case and do our best to accommodate.
Are events allowed at LuxStay estates?
+
Yes, events are permitted at our OBX estates with an events fee of $2,000. This covers weddings, corporate retreats, family reunions, birthday celebrations, and similar gatherings. Our Three Authors compound (The Fitzgerald, The Hemingway, and The Mark Twain combined) can accommodate up to 300+ guests for events with 46 bedrooms sleeping 100. Contact us to discuss your event needs.
What is the cancellation policy?
+
Cancellation terms vary by booking channel and season. Our standard policy is managed through OwnerRez. For the most current cancellation terms applicable to your specific reservation, please refer to your booking confirmation or contact us directly at
[email protected] or
(304) 902-6504.
How do I book directly (and save money)?
+
Booking directly through LuxStay USA avoids OTA (Airbnb/VRBO) service fees, which can add 12–20% to your total. Contact us directly at
(304) 902-6504 or
[email protected] for direct booking rates and availability. Returning guests also receive priority access to dates before they're listed publicly.
When is check-in and check-out?
+
Standard check-in is 4:00 PM and check-out is 10:00 AM. Early check-in or late check-out may be available based on the adjacent reservation schedule. Contact us in advance to request — we accommodate when we can. Please do not arrive before the confirmed check-in time as the property team needs time to prepare the home to LuxStay standards.
Is a security deposit required?
+
Security deposit requirements depend on the property and booking channel. Details will be clearly outlined in your booking confirmation. Our properties are inspected before and after each stay. We treat our guests with trust and expect the same in return — our deposit process is straightforward and fully refundable when the property is returned in good condition.
Property & Amenities
Are bed and bath linens provided?
+
Yes — linens are provided for stays of
7 nights or more. Included per the home's sleeping capacity:
- Sheets for all beds and advertised sleeper sofas or trundle beds
- 2 kitchen towels
- A bath mat for each full bathroom
- 1 bath towel, 1 washcloth, and 1 hand towel per person
Additional linens (extra towels, etc.) can be arranged if requested and paid for prior to arrival. Contact us to arrange this in advance.
Is the kitchen fully stocked?
+
Yes. The kitchen includes all dinnerware, silverware, pots, pans, and server ware. Basic appliances are provided: coffee maker, blender, toaster, and can opener.
Important: Paper products (paper towels, toilet paper), soap products, trash bags, spices, and dish soap are not provided. Guests are responsible for purchasing or bringing these items. We recommend stopping at one of the Corolla grocery stores on your way in before heading onto the 4×4 beach.
Does the pool open every day, or is it seasonal?
+
The pool is open Memorial Day through Labor Day by default. Outside of this window, the pool can be opened on request for a fee of $750/week. This is weather-dependent — pool heaters cannot effectively heat the pool in very cold weather, and we won't charge you for a service that can't be delivered. If you only want the pool for ambience (not swimming), contact us — this can be arranged for $300. Our Pool and Spa team will confirm feasibility before accepting payment.
Dogs are welcome. Cats are not permitted. Please confirm your pet details at time of booking — number of dogs, breeds, and sizes. Dogs must be supervised at all times on the 4×4 beach, especially around the wild horses. Currituck County requires all pets to be leashed when outside the property. Do not allow dogs to approach, chase, or interact with the wild horses — this is both illegal and dangerous.
Is WiFi available at the 4×4 beach properties?
+
Yes — all LuxStay estates have WiFi. Speeds may vary from those you experience in urban areas due to the remote location, but service is reliable for standard use including streaming. If you plan to work remotely, contact us to confirm connectivity details for your specific property.
What is the parking situation at the property?
+
We provide 3 parking spots at the beach house — all requiring 4×4 vehicles. Tyre pressure must be reduced by approximately 10–15 psi before driving on the sand. An overflow spot is available 2.5 miles from the beach house for non-4×4 vehicles. An additional off-site lot is available approximately 8 miles away near Historic Corolla Park (GPS: 36.377918, -75.831948).
Are there beach access and beach gear at the property?
+
Direct beach access is one of the defining features of our 4×4 estates. Your home is located directly on or immediately adjacent to the beach. Basic beach gear (chairs, umbrellas) varies by property — please confirm what's available for your specific estate. We recommend bringing or renting additional gear from Corolla beach outfitters for a fully stocked beach day.
Getting Here & Vehicles
What is the nearest airport?
+
Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the closest major airport — approximately 2.5 hours drive to the 4×4 beach properties. We recommend flying into Norfolk and renting a 4×4 vehicle at the airport before heading down. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is the next closest at approximately 3.5 hours. No commercial service exists to the Outer Banks itself.
How do I get to the property from Corolla?
+
Take NC-12 north through Corolla until the paved road ends near the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead Club. At that point, deflate your tyres and drive north on the beach. Our property GPS coordinates and detailed directions will be provided in your booking confirmation. If this is your first time on the 4×4 beach, allow extra time and arrive before dark. Your first drive will feel adventurous — subsequent ones will feel natural.
Is there a packing list for an OBX beach stay?
+
A comprehensive OBX packing list is available at
twiddy.com/outer-banks/guests/packing-list/. Key items specific to the 4×4 beach: a tyre gauge, shovel (just in case), basic recovery gear if you're cautious, and all groceries/paper products stocked up
before you get on the beach — the closest grocery is Corolla, which requires driving back on the sand.
Can I get grocery delivery to the 4×4 beach property?
+
Standard grocery delivery services (Instacart, etc.) generally do not deliver to the 4×4 beach area due to the unpaved access. We strongly recommend doing a full grocery shop in Corolla before getting on the beach. The Food Lion and Harris Teeter in Corolla are the main options. Plan a thorough shop — you'll want to minimise trips back to the paved road during your stay. Some restaurant delivery services (OBX Boil Company, Giant Slice Pizza) do service parts of the 4×4 area.
Are there travel tips or guides for the OBX I should review?
+
Activities & Things to Do
Will we see wild horses? How close do they come?
+
It's very common to see wild horses directly from the property — in your backyard, on the beach, or grazing in the dunes nearby. The Corolla wild horses are descendants of 16th-century Spanish Mustangs and roam freely through the 4×4 area. North Carolina law requires you to stay at least 50 feet from the horses at all times — no petting, feeding, or approaching. If a horse approaches your property, stay calm, remain inside, and keep dogs leashed and quiet. These encounters are spectacular but the horses are wild animals — always respect their space.
What water activities and rentals are available nearby?
+
The Corolla and Nags Head areas offer an excellent range of water activities:
- Surfing lessons — Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head surf schools
- Kayaking and paddleboarding — sound-side rentals in Corolla and Duck
- Parasailing — from multiple OBX operators
- Charter fishing — half-day and full-day trips from Oregon Inlet Marina
- Wild dolphin tours — sunset cruises from Corolla
- Wild horse tours — guided 4×4 tours departing from Corolla
- Kiteboarding — the Currituck Sound is world-class
What entertainment and nightlife options are available?
+
Live music and karaoke are available regularly at local bars and restaurants throughout the OBX. Our area-specific guides have full details:
- Corolla nightlife: Off the Wall Tap House (craft beer wall), Sundogs (live music, karaoke), Agave Roja (late-night cocktails)
- Nags Head nightlife: Lucky 12 Tavern (sports bar, 20 draft beers), Shaka's Beach Bar (live music, tropical vibes), Fish Heads at the Pier (tiki bar)
The OBX keeps things decidedly casual — shorts and flip flops are the standard everywhere, at all hours.
Are there lighthouses and historic sites to visit?
+
Five major lighthouses line the OBX — all worth visiting. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla is the closest and features the Whalehead Club historic mansion and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in the same park. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America (198 ft, open for climbing). See our
full Things to Do guide for hours, admission, and directions.
Are jet skis and boats permitted in the area?
+
Jet skis and motorboats are permitted on the Currituck Sound only (not the ocean surf zone near the beach). The boat ramp at the Whalehead Club in Historic Corolla Park provides sound access. Street-legal UTVs and side-by-sides require a county permit and are only available to residents and property owners — standard rental guests are not permitted to operate them on the 4×4 beach.
Is the Wright Brothers National Memorial worth visiting?
+
Absolutely — the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills is one of the most significant historic sites on the East Coast. The site where the first powered flight took place in 1903 includes the original launch track markers, the reconstructed camp buildings, the iconic granite monument atop Kill Devil Hill (great views), and a visitor centre with exhibits. Admission applies. About 45 minutes south of Corolla by vehicle.
